Color theory The study of how colors make people feel and their effects on a design is known as color theory. Color theory is used to explore the best types of colors to work in different design instances—for example, choosing a pastel scheme that needs to feel soft, or picking red and yellow that needs to evoke energy. Hue, tint, tone and shade
Hue is pure color. Tint is a hue with white added. Tone is a hue with gray added. Shade is a hue with black added.

In order to find the right area rug and then appropriately arrange it to marvelously accentuate your decor you’ll need to consider more than just style, color and material – size and shape matter too. An ideal size rug in a shape that best suits a particular living space will help to revitalize the entire aspect of a room while also displaying the finest qualities of the rug itself. Here are some supportive tips on how to arrange a new area rug. Know the rules, then bend at will! In general, the rule of thumb is to allow approximately 18 inches of exposed floor space around the perimeter of an area rug, however the overall size and location of the room should also be taken into consideration. The 18” rule works well in rooms that are enclosed and separate from surrounding areas while the look of smaller rooms may benefit from having less exposed floor space. Keep in mind that an undersized rug can make a room look small and make the other furnishings around it look uncoordinated. When it comes to area rugs, bigger can indeed be better. Before buying a rug map out your room to scale and consider doorways, furniture size, and exposure to the sun among other things. Pay attention to the details of your space and how everything will fit. LIVING ROOM The dimensions of a living room will dictate the ideal size and shape rug for the space. Here are some helpful tips that take into account the layout of the furniture using rectangular rugs. 5’ x 8’ – All legs off, furniture surrounding edges of the rug – When opting for a smaller rug, keeping all legs of the furniture off and positioned around the edges of the rug is a smart choice. This is a particularly effective decorating strategy if your rug has bold, flamboyant patterns and coloring that you’d like to fill the room. 8’x10’ – Front legs on the outer edges of the rug – The most popular layout for living room furnishings. This arrangement will help to connect the furniture and harmonize room decor while also lending a wonderful sense of proportion to the entire space. 9’x12’ – All legs on the rug – For a much more “pulled-together” look, put all of the legs of the couches and sofas on the surface of a 9’x12’ area rug. This arrangement will tend to define and establish the aspect of a room provided that it is able to accommodate a larger rug. DINING ROOM When choosing a rug for the dining room be sure that it is big enough to allow all four legs of the chairs to sit comfortably on the rug, even when the chairs are pulled away from the table. A loose rule of thumb to follow is that your rug should be extended at least 24 inches around the table. 5’x 8’ – Use a 5’x 8’ rectangular rug in smaller dining areas. Table and all four chair legs on the rug. 8’x 10’ or 9’ x 12’ – These rugs will generally accommodate 6 – 8 chairs. Remember to leave approximately 18’ between the perimeter of the rug and the walls. 7’ – 9’ Round – A round rug works nicely with a square table and 4 – 6 chairs around it. You can also use a rectangle shaped rug under a square table. THE BEDROOM The most important factors in selecting the right size area rug for the bedroom are the dimensions of your bed as well as the room. 5’ x 8’ – Full Size Bed – This rug works best when placed horizontally under the bottom two-thirds of a full sized bed, the rug exposed in front and on both sides. 8’ x 10’ or 9’ x 12’ – Queen Size Bed – Follow the same general suggestions with larger rugs and a queen size bed. Place the rug perpendicular under the bed with enough of the rug reaching out on the sides and in front to place your feet comfortably when getting out of bed or sitting at the foot. 8’ x 10’ or 9’ x 12’ – King Size Bed – Remember the “Bigger is Better” rule when it comes to arranging an area rug under a king size bed. A rug that is too small will detract from grand look and dimensions of the entire room. 9’ x 12’ – Twin Beds – In a bedroom with a one twin bed select an area rug that is large enough to be exposed 18 – 24 inches in front and on the side. For larger rooms with two twin size beds arranged side by side, a 9’ x 12’ rug is the perfect size to connect and balance the furnishings of the entire room. Can’t make up your mind between purchasing a wool rug or a synthetic rug? We've got you covered! Cantikwall can help you choose which rug material suits you and your lifestyle best. What is a synthetic rug? Synthetic rugs are made using man-made fibers, like polypropylene, nylon, acrylic, or polyester. These materials are made from petroleum in a lab and sent to factories to be machine woven into rugs. What are wool rugs? Wool rugs are hand woven or hand-tufted and use natural wool with hundreds of knots used to create intricate patterns and designs. Cantikwall also has the best collection of wool rugs that are far better than any other kind! Did you know that wool is a natural noise insulator? This prevents your home from echoing and shielding you from hearing outside traffic noise. How long do wool rugs and synthetic rugs last? Wool: Well-maintained wool rugs will be in your home for at least 50 years and can be used as heirloom pieces for generations. Wool is one of Mother Nature’s most durable fibers. You will be able to pass your wool rug down to your children and grandchildren for many generations. Because of their sturdiness and scarceness, wool rugs can make great investment pieces with antique wool rugs selling at high values. Wool has a naturally curly texture and spiral shape that make it ideal for high traffic areas. Wool will not be disheveled down over years and heavy furniture. Just like fine leather, wool rugs impress with age making them look and feel even more luxurious than the day they were delivered to your home. Synthetic:
The usual life span of a polypropylene, nylon, acrylic or polyester rug is 3-5 years with professional cleaning. Synthetic rugs are not as resilient to foot traffic as wool rugs. All synthetic rugs lack wool's brilliant spiral structure created by Mother Nature, meaning the fibers tend to become matted down and tear from foot traffic and heavy furniture. If you want jaw dropping looking interior, amazingly amazing and above all look and feel luxurious, stop gazing around your room by instead looking beneath your feet. What is the one of the most underestimate decoration item that you can buy and placed it on the floor that 200% guaranteed will changed the whole appearance of a room? We’re talking about rug of course! ![]() Rugs are focal show pieces for any interior and are one of the few decoration item people will actually interact with. Getting the design right is an essential part of the interior designing process where other decoration element such as furniture, flooring, paint or wainscoting can mingle seamlessly based on the rug. For this reason, it’s important not to scrimp on buying a decent one. Good quality rugs are longer lasting, easier to clean and have a tighter weave meaning they won’t pile and look untidy. Furthermore, if you’re looking to create a luxury effect, better quality rugs use more natural fibers and are kinder to the environment. Great styling doesn’t have to break the bank but, expect to pay anywhere from between MYR2000-MYR5000 for a long lasting, designer rug. This is a conservative estimate for one of the most important purchases you’ll make. When selecting a rug start with the size. Do you want a large area rug to anchor furniture together or a smaller piece to place a coffee or side table on? If undecided, a good rule of thumb is to avoid the floating island look, always go larger than you think you’ll need to avoid a purposeless space. If you’re redecorating why not start with buying a rug first? Look for textural and color properties on a rug that you like and fit the color scheme around it. Cheaper rugs often look the same color and texture all over, whilst luxury ones will have key details and elements which can be reflected on cushions, curtains and lampshades throughout the room.
